Research
The aim of the group is to explore the applicability of the novel meso-OFR, based on Smooth Periodic Constrictions (SPC) geometry, in different fields, such as crystallisation, bioprocess, extraction, etc. For that the group is focus on the following topics:
-
explore flow field and mixing in different OFR geometries;
-
control nucleation and crystal growth in continuous flow;
-
bioprocess intensification;
-
online image analysis technique (IA) ;
-
OFR scale-up studies.
Projects
The research projects have been developed in different fields, like:
-
continuous crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients and proteins;
-
antibodies crystallization -Immunoglobulin G (IgG);
-
bioreactors optimisation;
-
extraction optimisation;
-
solids mixing and drying;
-
and, education.

DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES
ABOUT US
The meso oscillatory flow reactors (meso OFR) research area belong to the Supramolecular Assemblies research group of Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE). The area was created in 2015 by António Ferreira and fund by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (IF/01087/2014) to explore the applicability of a novel technology (meso-OFR: EP3057694 (A1) (2016), US2016250615 (A1) (2016); PCT/IB2017/052005 (2017)), developed by LEPABE - University of Porto and CEB - University of Minho, in different fields, particularly, on continuous crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
